Maritime List 262 – Garden of the Deep

One of the items (#16) in this catalog is a Victorian-era pressed seaweed album. On the first page of the album a ring of delicate sea grass has been laid out to look like a wreath, inside of which is written a poem that begins, “Fair is the garden of the deep.” Out here at the northern tip of Gloucester, Mass. in the long, lovely July days of high summer, the “garden of the deep” is fair indeed. So I thought I’d name this list in honor of that trope. There are certainly some interesting items in the depths of Maritime List 262, including a whaling log kept by a woman, a rare whaling shipwreck sermon, a full set of the Naval Chronicles, a collection of Kenneth Roberts first editions, and the logbook of a New York City Slave Trader, possibly on a slaving run in 1850. So, come on in! The water’s fine.
