Tower of Strength. A History of Fort Phoenix.
Bernard, Donald R.
(Reynolds-DeWalt Printing), ( 1975), (New Bedford, MA)
8vo, 23 cm.
History of this New Bedford landmark, with its sweeping views of Buzzard’s Bay – from its discovery by Gosnold in 1602, its use by privateers and John Paul Jones, through its strategic importance during the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The State of Massachusetts acquired Fort Phoenix Beach in the 1960s, and it is now a popular reservation and park. First edition of a scarce book, limited to 500 copies, this one bearing an inscription by the author. Very good in original cloth binding.
