Containing Plain Instructions for Collecting and Preserving, and a List of All the Known Special and Localities in Great Britain. This is an important early reference that sheds light on a popular Victorian hobby, now coming back into vogue. The first 40 pages of the book constitute a “How To” for recognizing, gathering, cleaning, floating out, drying, and mounting specimens. The second part of the text is an “Alphabetical Index of the Marine Algae: Localities where found, and Time of Appearance.” A rare book, with only two libraries in America holding copies, and nothing online but POD reprints. Bound in half green morocco over marbled boards. Some wear to corners, but still a very good copy.
