Griffiths was an influential naval architect who was important in the development of clipper ship design. His ships include the Rainbow and the Sea Witch. His “Progressive Ship Builder” is the last of a series of books written by Griffith on shipbuilding, and carries the theoretical and practical aspects of marine architecture into the 1870s. It was published in two volumes in 1875 and 1876. However, it seems to have been preceeded by an 1874/75 printing which is rare. Worldcat shows only the Linda Hall Library owning a set. This is only volume I of the two volume set, but it bears the inscription, “A.E. Chapman from Matthew Turner, 1900.” Turner caught Gold Fever in 1849 and moved from the midwest to California. He spent a few years as an unsuccessful miner, but eventually opened a shipyard in Benicia, California. The Matthew Turner shipyard at Benicia built at least 154 wooden-hulled vessels. Scott 779, citing only the 1875/76 edition. Not in McDonald. Volume I, which stands alone. Bound in half morocco over boards. Gold spine lettering. Backstrip worn, text clean.
