Item #50058
The First Cruise of the United States Frigate Essex.
Preble, Capt. George Henry.
Essex Institute, ( 1870), Salem
23.5 cm. 108 pp.
Price: $75

“With a short account of her origin, and subsequent career until captured by the British in 1814, and her ultimate fate.” Preble was active in the Mexican War and in the Civil War, perhaps best noted for twice failing to capture the elusive Confederate raider “Florida.” He was also a respected historian and author. The present work, an offprint from the “Essex Institute Historical Collections” details the remarkable story of David Porter and the “Essex,” sailing off on his own and sweeping the south Pacific clear of British shipping in the War of 1812. Bound as issued in printed wrappers, which are lightly chipped. Tear at bottom of back wrapper with no loss, else very good condition.
