The storied Mrs. Beeton in one of her later appearances. “Household Management” was first published in 1861, born of a magazine series launched in 1859. Beeton died in 1865, but her book lived on, growing in size. This behemoth, the book’s “five hundred and eightieth thousand,” boasts 13 folding color plates, 68 full-page b/w plates, innumerable illustrations in text, dozens of advertisements for household products, and useful information (including recipes throughout) for everyone from the mistress and her housekeeper, to the coachman, laundry-maid, and wet-nurse. Hours of entertainment in a gaudy Victorian binding of highly gilt red morocco over green boards. Light wear, but a very good copy.
