The Bombardier, and Pocket Gunner.
Adye, Ralph Willett.
E. Larkin, ( 1804), Charlestown, MA
15 cm., (13), vi, (7)-277 pp.
Price: $1250

First American, from the second London edition. A pocket field guide for artillery officers, arranged alphabetically by topic. With geometrical diagrams and many tables in the text for ballistic ranges, ammunition requirements, company rations, etc. This book has an interesting association. The dedication page contains the ownership signature of James Glynn, 1817, Gibraltar Bay, and a presentation inscription on the front pastedown from Doctr. James Norris to Julius Adams, 1864. Glynn passed Midshipman in 1815, and retired as Commodore in 1867. He was in command of “USS Preble” and rescued the sailors of the whale ship “Lagoda,” who were being held prisoner in Japan. He was later instrumental in paving the way for Perry’s expedition to that country. James Norris was named Assistant Surgeon in 1814, and retired in 1827. Adams was an Assistant Surgeon in 1864, and resigned the next year. Bound in contemporary sheep with leather spine label. Very good condition.
