The Arts of Rowing and Training. With an Appendix Containing the Laws of Boat-Racing, &c. First edition, and scarce. No copies for sale on the internet. The most recent copy to sell at auction was for $346 (with premium) at Doyle’s in 2022. They comment, “Likely the earliest comprehensive work on the technique of rowing (Britain, F. Oar Scull and Rudder: A Bibliography of Rowing. #23, p. 6). This book contains detailed instructions on proper rowing technique, the rules of regattas, descriptions of racing boats, as well as advice on training regimens, with detailed information on exercise and diet – no raw vegetables or green tea, but make sure to have a beer with lunch (p. 133-134).” Bound as issued in blue cloth with gold cover decoration. Backstrip chipped and spine ends worn, else a very good copy.
