Item #50044
Petition for Convoy from Barbados to American Colonies, February 23, 1760
Manuscript.

Folio sheet, 23 x 37 cm. accomplished in manuscript.
Price: $850

The Masters of Merchant Vessels request that Thomas Pye, Vice Admiral of the Blue, provide a convoy for vessels about to depart to “Sal Tortuga” in the Cape Verdes islands “for the loading of salt.” They are concerned that “the [salt] Pond will be broken up by those [French] vessels already their & by that means your petitioners will be prevented from getting their loads of salt to their great loss… but especially to the loss of the American Colonies.” They fear the flats will be ruined before they can produce salt. Presumably a British naval presence would prevent this.
