Item #43821
Omnibus Christi Fidelibus ad quos Literae Praesentes pervenerent. Nos Ministri Serenissimi Principis Domini nostril Georgii Secundi Regis in Portu Oppidi Bostonii apud Nov-Anglos Salutem.
Document.

Pre-printed document written entirely in Latin and accomplished in manuscript. On heavy paper measuring 11 x 7 ¼ inches.
Price: $250

This document is a clearance for Simon Gross, of the Schooner Lydia, carrying no guns, for a voyage from Boston to Bilboa. Probably dating 1750-1760. See Ford, “Massachusetts Broadsides” for a similar document – #1306 – which he dates 1763. What is particularly noteworthy, at least from one point of view, is that this piece of paper was discovered and offered for sale by legendary New England book dealer Benjamin Tighe. See https://www.americanantiquarian.org/Almanac/BennyTighe.pdf for Marcus McCorison’s biographical essay on Benny Tighe. Offered with a TNs (typed note, signed) by Tighe quoting this document to a customer and sharing some biographical details.

As this ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy... God keep thee!
