Between 1749 and 1788 this hardworking naturalist produced 36 volumes of his great “Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière”, which influenced Lamarck and Cuvier. This is a selection of some of his essays plus descriptions of more than 50 animals, each charmingly illustrated by a wood engraved plate. Bound in full mottled calf with gold decoration and lettering. Some cover wear. Text mildly foxed. All edges gilt.
