First edition. Barnard was a career engineer officer in the U.S. Army, serving in the MexicanAmerican War, as the superintendent of the United States Military Academy and as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. His selection as chief engineer on the project proposed by the Tehuantepec Railroad Company of New Orleans came about as a result of his survey of the battlefields around Mexico City during the Mexican War. This is the atlas volume to accompany a book by J.G. Williams, “The Isthmus of Tehuantepec: Being the Results of a Survey for a Railroad to Connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.” Contents of this atlas are as follows: 1- Map of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec; 2 – Plan of… Isthmus of Tehuantepec between the Jaltepec River and the Pacific Plains; 3 – Mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River; 4 – Coatzacoalcos River to the Town of Mina-titlan; 5 – Coatzacoalcos River to Isla del Suchil; 6 – River Uspanapa; 7 – Chart of LaVentosa and Salina Cruz; 8 – Entrance of the Boca Barra. Chart #5 is tanned; the others are in good condition except for some tanning on the outer edges of folds.
