Detailed account of an excursion of 5 Englishmen to Mount Lofou, a sacred Taoist site, about 60 miles east of Canton. Much local custom and color, topography, natural history, architecture, and religion, with an interesting discussion of the Tao. Chinese characters are printed in the text along with anglicized cognates. This is a rare and lovely book, bound in publisher’s textured boards, with Chinese characters on back (i.e., front) board. Nothing but PODs or reprints online. Only one copy has sold at auction in the past century or so – a beat up copy went for 780 pounds in 2009. This copy is in near-fine condition.
