Between 1630 and 1651 William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth Plantation, wrote a detailed account of the Pilgrim’s experiences on the Mayflower and daily activities of the colony. Early historians made use of this manuscript, but at some point in the late 1700s it was lost. Bradford’s work remained missing until it was rediscovered in the Bishop of London’s library in 1855. One year later the “History of Plymouth Plantation” was published from this original manuscript. In his preface to this work, editor Charles Deane relates this story in detail. This copy is notable for several reasons. At the bottom of the terminal errata page is a printed slug reading “Fifty copies privately printed.” (Little, Brown published a trade edition of this work also in 1856.) Furthermore, it is inscribed on the front blank, “Hon. Nathan Appleton, / from / Charles Deane Esq. / by the hand of Robt. Winthrop.” Deane, of course, was the book’s editor. Robert Winthrop, a descendant of colonial governor John Winthrop, was active in politics until the early 1850s, then became interested in historical matters. He was head of the Mass. Historical Society for 30 years and played a part in seeing the fugitive Bradford manuscript into print. Hon. Nathan Appleton, a New England textile baron, was also a friend of Deane and Winthrop. True to Deane’s inscription. Appleton’s engraved bookplate graces the front pastedown. Howes B-703. Sabin 7262. Bound in publisher’s blind stamped cloth with gold spine lettering. Spine ends worn, scattered foxing throughout. Worldcat shows 10 libraries holding copies of this privately printed edition, but it is scarce in the trade.
