(4), (7)-34pp. b/w title page woodcut.
This is a novelization of a real shipwreck, documented in Huntress, and by Edward Rowe Snow in his Mysterious Tales of the New England Coast.” In reality the “President” was caught in a gale off Nantucket Shoals and disappeared, never to be seen again until a piece of her stern board washed ashore in 1950, bearing the letters PRESIDE… In this novel the author imagines the ship attacked by a pirate schooner, with crew members kidnapped and taken to the Sandwich Islands. Not surprisingly “a young man by the name of Bruce, a perfect Adonis, as it regarded his personal appearance, and before he had been long on the island, he became familiar with a young and beautiful; girl of the Sandwich Islands…” You can guess the rest. Or if you can’t you’ll have to purchase this potboiler and read it yourself. Wright I, 931. Huntress 313C:18. Despite its quirky pagination it is complete as issued – untrimmed and partially unopened, in original illustrated yellow wrappers. The wrappers are a little grubby but it is an excellent copy overall.
