Engraved Membership Certificate for the Marine Society of Newburyport.
Hooker & Fairman,
Folio sheet, 17 3/4 x 13 inches. b/w engraved vignettes and text.
This engraved certificate, no. 316, features vignettes of a ship launch and wreck, Neptune, dolphins, a drowned sailor and some scantily-clad female survivors, and handsome views of Newburyport waterfront circa. 1840. The engravers, Hooker & Fairman, had been retained by the Society since 1808. The certificate was made out to Capt. John Howard in 1885. Howard began his career at sea in 1861 aboard pilot schooners “America” and “Sea Ranger.” He became a captain in 1880, master of the brig “John C. Noyes.” Signed by William Bayley, Secretary, and Robert Couch, President. Laid down on linen, with 1 inch margin around plate mark. Very good copy of a rare certificate, suitable for display.
