This archive consists of business and family records of the Delano family, prominent merchants and ship owners of Kingston, Massachusetts. Benjamin Delano (1778-1868), was the patriarch of the family throughout the first half of the century, and is featured in the material gathered here (Delano’s Wharf, built by him in 1803, still stands today). Benjamin’s brother Joshua (1744-1816) was a sea captain, and much of the paper in this archive has to do with ships under his management and several of his voyages to southern ports and Cuba. People with whom the Delanos traded are numerous and include brother-in-law Peter Winsor, Luther Briggs, James Fuller, John R. Bradlee, Nathan Carruth, John M. Marston, William Fisk, George Dana, Solomon Washburn, Joseph Clark, Abner Alden, Rufus Ripley, Parker H. Pearce, Charles Cobb, Joseph Foster, Charles Bartlett, Josiah Robbins, Jacob Hall, Lysander Bartlett, Josiah Thatcher, Abraham Quincy, William Humphrey, and many others. At the heart of the collection are 15 daybooks, journals, ledgers, and sheets of accounts recording Delano commercial activities, spanning the years 1794 to 1882, and running to a total of about 4000 pages. These are supported by about 2500 invoices, receipts, accounts, promissory notes, financial records from various voyages, prices current, availability and disposition of various cargoes, charter parties, ship building and repair, reports on labor, sailing and political conditions, financial arrangements, and the myriad situations that occurred over nearly a century of trading activity. Cargoes mentioned include fish, timber, corn, rum, cotton, molasses, copper, cement, fruits and other agricultural products, and coal. There is also a file of about 200 pieces of correspondence, wills, and financial paper documenting Delano family domestic and business matters, letters from captains in their employ, various versions of Joshua Delano’s will, at least one signed by him, as well as similar documents from other family members and associates.
