Knox and his regiment arrived in Halifax in 1757, intending to take part in the expedition against Louisbourg. However, the attack was postponed and Knox did not participate in the siege. He and his men later participated in the battle of the Plains of Abraham, served under James Murray at Quebec in the winter of 1759-60, and were present for the surrender of Montreal in 1760. Knox gives a first-hand account of the battles, and supplements his narrative with printings of important official documents and orders from both the British and the French. The frontispiece portraits are of Generals Amherst and Wolfe. Thomas Kitchin’s “A New and Accurate Map of the British Dominions in America” shows British territory in North America according to the treaty of 1763. It measures 25 1/2 x 23 inches, and is in very good condition. See Howes K-220, who calls Knox’s book “Reliable, full and interesting.” Lande 486 – “This book includes a good natural history of the country, and is one of the best original sources for the death of Wolfe and the conquest of Canada.” TPL 323 – “… one of the most accurate and detailed accounts available”. Streeter 1030. Sabin 38163.
