Romans, Puysegur, Walker, et al.
Robert Laurie and James Whittle, ( 1799), London
Three 8vo vols, 22.5 cm. (6), 46; (2), 85, (1); iv, 47, (1) pp.
Price: $300

Scarce pilots for Windward waters, these are Laurie & Whittle’s reprints of Sayer’s sailing directions, with additions (Laurie & Whittle succeeded the Sayer firm). They were published in conjunction with the publication of charts of these waters, and these charts are advertised prominently in several places in each of the sailing directions. In fact, the two Roman titles come with this advice printed at the bottom of the title page: “These Directions are Sold only with Roman’s Pilot.” Adams & Waters do not list a 1799 edition of the first tile, and Worldcat shows only a single library holding a copy of that edition. Worldcat shows two libraries holding copies of the second title, and four libraries holding hard copies of the third title. See also Adams & Waters 3022 – 3030.Bound in contemporary full calf with light cover wear. Contents in very good condition.
