Authors recollections of the War of 1812. He describes his capture by the British, his time as a prisoner and his months in Dartmoor, with an account of the murder of American prisoners there. The narrative is written in a lively manner and is a rich source of information about naval customs and language of this time. Each volume with a historical society bookplate, and each volume inscribed by the son of the author. Volume I also bears the ownership inscription of marine historian Leon Polland. Smith II 739. The book is something of a publishing oddity. Volume I, according to the imprint, was published in Baltimore in 1841. Volume II was published in Boston by a different firm in the same year. Both volumes are bound in matching blind stamped publishers green cloth bindings, with gold lettering on backstrips slightly at odds. This is an important book, scarce in the trade, with nothing but reprints online.
