Robbins had joined a mutiny aboard the British frigate “Hermione”. He was jailed in South Carolina, and England sought his extradition. But Robbins claimed that he had been impressed into British service, and was actually an American citizen. Driven by anti-British sentiment, this case became a cause celebre. Documents included in Adams’ report indicate that Robbins was, in fact, an Irishman “who to his other crimes added perjury, in the hope, thereby, to escape the punishment due to piracy and murder. ” Evans 36124. Removed from larger volume. Very good condition.
