Captain Parnall is well-known for his kindness and attention to Passengers… Bristol was a major port of departure for famine refugees from the west of Ireland, via Cork, and 1851 was one of the peak years of emigration. Neither the offer of private state rooms nor Captain Parnell’s “kindness” would necessarily apply to the masses huddled below. Like clipper ship broadsides, these were ephemeral items, intended for disposal. They are rare today
