Peabody was a photographer who began work in the Boston area in the 1880s. He was a contemporary of the prolific Nathaniel Stebbins, but his work tends to be more thoughtfully composed. Also, his marine photographs are quite a bit scarcer (Peabody had a second career as a western landscape photographer, and these images exist in greater numbers). In the 1890s he began publishing groups of images of American yachts, which he sold by subscription from his Boston office. These fascicles were gathered together in the scarce 1893 publication, “Representative American Yachts. A Collection of One Hundred Views.” The individual fascicles are scarcer still. The one offered here is Number 5 in the series. It consists of ten folio sized heliotype plates of racing yachts with its own preface and binding. Scarce thus. Not in Toy. Plates clean and fresh. A lovely copy in original blindstamped binding.
