“Twelfth edition – revised and corrected” of this popular work, which stayed in print through much of the 19th century. It was based on Dana’s own experiences at sea and was meant to inform mariners about the basics of rigging and seamanship, commercial practices and maritime law. With a dictionary of sea terms and four plates and corresponding “explanations” of spars, sails, framing, and rigs. With the handsome engraved bookplate of F.W. Lincoln Jr. & Co. Mathematical instrument makers & nautical stationers” on front pastedown. Bound in original cloth with gold cover lettering and design. Moderate wear. Front blank removed. A good copy. Interestingly, the only copies online at this time (July 2026) are modern paperback reprints. This one is the genuine article.
