As an Illustration of the Plan of Education Established at his School near Philadelphia. Etienne Bonnot de Condillac, a friend of Diderot and Rousseau, and disciple of Locke, was a philosopher and psychologist. He believed that all learning and thinking originated in sensory experience. Joseph Neef, a Frenchman influenced by the ideas of educational reformer Pestalozzi, opened a school for boys near Philadelphia, in 1809, and eventually joined the utopian farm at New Harmony. He disdained rote learning and believed his charges learned best by experience. According to Richard Owen, Neef “joined in most of their sports, and accompanied them in their extended walks, encouraging them to make collections of natural objects, and to observe closely everything within the range of their vision.” Bound as issued in calf over boards. Stamp on front blank, “Withdrawn from Congregational Library.” Front board detached but present.
