The Life of Gould, An Ex-Man-of-Wars-Man.
Gould, Roland F.
Claremont Manufacturing Co., ( 1867), Claremont, NH
(xii)-239 pp. b/w frontispiece and plates.
Life before the mast, including the three years cruise of the line of battle ship Ohio, on the Mediterranean station, under the veteran Commodore Hull. Much travel, several floggings recorded. Interestingly – to me, anyway – this is a sort of elaborate mendicant’s appeal, since Gould is now blind. The preface contains a couple of testimonials from doctors and clergymen recommending “Mr. Gould and his book to public patronage,” and there is a cancel over the copyright statement, “1867, by R.F. Gould.” Smith II, 2464. VG. A few spots on the title page, otherwise a very good copy in original blindstamped binding.
