This is a remarkable record and a valuable resource. It was kept by a man named George A. Hoefft, who shows up in the 1920 and 1930 federal census returns as a ship broker living in Brooklyn, NY. It is Hoefft’s manuscript compilation, apparently made between 1913 and 1939, of information on more than 400 American merchant schooners built from the 1870s to the 1920s. Facts recorded are when and where built, number of masts, tonnage, “draft”, brokers, captain, owners, and cargo. In many cases further information, such as the fate of the vessel, has been added or amended after the original entry was made. Newspaper clippings from the “Brooklyn Eagle” Hoefft’s hometown paper, add further information. All this data is made manageable by a 23-page alpha index at the beginning of the book. Bound in red cloth over black boards, backstrip lacking, sewing tight.
