19.5 cm. xiii, 140 pp. Color and b/w plates, sepia-toned photo reproductions
Price: $250
First edition. Generously illustrated with 27 plates, many in color, including stylized images such as “Tiger killing five poisonous reptiles.” Also an interesting double-page spread of shop signs. Given the vastness of the country, Ms. Bogan has limited herself to describing “what one needs to know when he is spending his first years in Peking.” With the bookplate of Arcadi Gluckman, a US Army colonel who spoke fluent Chinese and was among Stillwell’s primary officers in the China Theater. He was also a gun collector, dealer, and author of several gun books. His surname is stamped in gilt at the bottom of the backstrip. Scarce in the trade. Bound in half morocco over boards with gold spine lettering. Light cover wear, very good condition.
