Falconer Improved and Modernized. The Mariner’s New and Complete Naval Dictionary.
Norie, J.W.
J. D. Dewick, ( 1804), London
21.5 cm. 484 pp. Handcolored and b/w copper plate engravings.
Price: $250

This is the third edition of an interesting work, which carries the subtitle “Falconer Improved and Modernized.” It expands on Falconer’s famous “Dictionary.” Part I is a British dictionary “containing a copious explanation of all the technical operation of a ship… together with a full account of every thing relating to masts, sails, yards, rigging &c…” Part II is a “modern French marine dictionary.” In a curious note, the author remarks, “The once-celebrated Marine Dictionary, formerly published by Falconer, having become obsolete on account of the great improvements made in Naval affairs… and the expense (Two Guineas) being greatly objected to, the following improved work on the subject is presented to the public at about a quarter of the price.” See Craig p. 16 for variants. This copy itself is an interesting variant. Worldcat notes, “Title page a cancel, with list of “New copper plates” on verso. Advertisements on p. [iv], including one for Norie’s Planisphærium cœleste ‘this day … published.'” Apparently it lacks the plate of the French flag opposite page 387, called for in the list of plates. However, this plate was never bound in, and may not have been intended for this revised edition. Bound in half calf over worn marbled boards. Backstrip chipped, as is spine label. Text in very good condition with occasional light foxing on some of the plates.
