Second and best edition of “The Strange History of a Mysterious Being and The Account of a Remarkable Journey.” A popular turn-of-the-century science fiction allegory fantasy romance about a man’s journey to the center of the Earth with a mysterious guide, blending scientific speculation, mysticism, and secret societies. The first, unillustrated, edition was published in 1895. This second edition is noted for its detailed, hallucinatory illustrations by J. Augustus Knapp. The title, duh, is “Aphrodite” spelled backwards. Wikipedia notes, “Eventually a popular success, the book had eighteen editions and was translated into seven languages. Etidorhpa literary clubs were founded in the United States, and some parents named their infant daughters Etidorhpa.” This copy has cover wear and a front inner hinge that is cracked but holding. The text is in very good condition.
