19 pp. Hand color flag illustration.
According to a preface by Martha J. Coston, the Navy tested her night signaling system in 1859 and issued “the most favorable reports.” This was an ingenious system using red and green flares, which were improvements on notes made by her deceased husband. According to http://www.civilwarsignals.org/pages/signal/signalpages/flare/coston.html the Navy liked them well enough to buy $20,000 worth of them. This book is a collection of international endorsements of her system, in preparation for her securing another patent on an improved system in 1871. Quite scarce. Worldcat shows only two libraries holding copies. Fine condition in original yellow printed wrappers.
