Four invoices for towing services rendered, with woodcut illustrations. Annan, Rockefeller, and Beard all employed the same woodcut featuring a steam tug with a flag at the bow, to which the firm’s initials could be added. The Rockefeller line was in fact part of the early history of the amalgamation of Standard Oil Company, an example of Rockefeller’s stranglehold on all aspects of the trade – including shipping – to control rates and reduce costs. Similarly, Kennedy’s Towing Line and Arthur Kill Towing Line employ the same woodcut illustration, while Harbor towing Line uses the same woodcut of the tug employed by Annan, Rockefeller, and Beard.
