The “#16” designation on this packet of sailmaker’s needles refers to the size of these heavy-duty hand sewing needles. They feature a distinct triangular shaft and point and are specifically used for sewing thick, heavy-duty fabrics. The triangular shape is the defining feature of these needles. Unlike regular sewing needles that part the threads, a sail needle cuts three tiny slits in the fabric. This opens up a slightly larger hole, which allows thick, waxed twine to pass through easily. This prevents the twine from wearing out (chafing) over time. Size #16: 2.6 inches long. This is an all-around needle. It works well for most sail repairs. The needles are stored in a plain paper folder which fits inside the printed packaging. I think these needles are Civil War era or just thereafter. Light wear to printed packet. Needles have surface rust which can be removed with emery paper. Each needle is stamped “Jas. Smith & Sons 16”
