First English edition, “Translated from the French with notes by an English Gentleman, who resided some time in that country.” Cox I, p. 383, who notes, “The author was a French botanist who entered the service of the French East India Company in order to study the natural history round about the French settlement in Senegambia.” The French edition was published in 1757. Much on the natural history of the West African slaving country, but also information on indigenous people. Bound in period full calf, Backstrip laid down, with labels and gold decoration preserved. Some offsetting to the folding map of Senegal, very good condition.
