…or an account of the climate, soil, population, manufactures, naval and military strength, of Morocco, Fez, Algiers, Tripoli, and Tunis: also a description of their mode of warfare. Interspersed with anecdotes of cruel treatment towards christian captives. Charles William Janson was an Englishman who took up journalism in the United States. He is best known for his book, “Stranger in America” which is advertised on the title page of this book. A scarce and interesting work, in that it provides a British view of American military actions against Barbary pirates in 1801-1815. Janson tells of American traitors who “turned turk” and provided logisitical support for the enemy states. He is also a fierce critic of American slavery, comparing that practice to those of the “barbaric” Barbary States. First edition of a scarce and overlooked text. Not in Howes, Streeter, or Sabin. Bound in full calf with gilt rolls on edges, rebacked to match, with original spine label laid down. Text and folding map in near fine condition.
