First edition of this account of the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Franz Josef Land, where they spent three years surveying and recording meteorological conditions. Remarkably, Jackson stumbled onto Nansen and Johansen, who had abandoned the “Fram” and made a dash for the north pole. The two explorers were forced to turn back short of their goal, kayaking through open water in the polar seas, and finally, fortunately, stumbling upon an island where they wintered over like bears in hibernation. The next spring they were discovered by Jackson, who had no idea of their location, and was on another mission entirely. Talk about “fortunate!” See Arctic Bib. 7943. A near fine copy in publisher’s illustrated cloth, and scarce thus.
