Dampier was the best known of the famous group of English buccaneers that tormented the Spaniards in the South Sea from 1680 to 1720… He traveled extensively in the Orient on several voyages which lasted from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on the Australian mainland. Hill 418. This is the third edition of the first in what would eventually be four books by Dampier describing his adventures. It contains five maps, as called for, four of which are folding.
