American rivers, canals, railways, roads of the early 19th century. Second edition, “Corrected and Improved From The Edition Of 1826, And Much Enlarged, From Authentic Materials, Down To The Present Time.” Howes A-317 considers this the best edition, enlarged, and rates it as an “aa” in rarity. See also Sabin 2013. This is an attractive survival, bound as issued in cloth over boards. The spine label, a portion of which is still visible, has been laid over by a manuscript label. The front joint has been reinforced. Traces of old, faint damp staining throughout. The rare folding frontispiece map, 25 x 17 3/4 inches, usually found missing, is present, as is the folding plate of railroads and canals at the back of the book. Both are tanned and show some offsetting. The pages are evenly tanned. This copy is uncut and mostly unopened. Housed in a clamshell box, cloth over boards, with label.
