Here’s a photo of me and my pal Anthony Weller taken about ten years ago when Anthony was a world-class jazz guitarist. By that time he’d also published four novels and an award-winning travel book about India called “Days and Nights on the Grand Trunk Road.” We were writing buddies, and Anthony’s superb editorial skills helped me through my first four books. On top of all that he was a deeply-read lover of modern literature and he had one of the coolest collections of 20th century authors I’ve ever seen. It was cool because he couldn’t afford first editions so he collected second and third editions that, in most cases, with their spiffy dust jackets, looked exactly like first editions. Back when first editions were actually worth something you’d walk into his library and think, “Wow! There must be a million dollars sitting on these shelves!” – until you started opening them. As Anthony pointed out more than once, they didn’t read any different. Very cool.
But all that’s over now because Anthony’s getting ready to die. I visit him every week and was aware of his decline. But even I was surprised to get this email yesterday…
Dear Friends of Anthony Weller,
Happy holidays to you, once again. We are 3 plus years into our collective effort to support Anthony. As we have learned together over these years, Anthony’s disease is progressive, with no chance of a plateau. In the final chapter, Anthony’s lungs will fail, due to paralysis, and he will, essentially, suffocate.
Those of us who have had the good fortune to visit Anthony this year have witnessed a slow, steady decline. In the last 4 months, Anthony’s ability to speak has withered away because he does not have the muscle control to push air across his vocal cords. As of today, he really cannot speak. Sam Winebaum and others have worked to compensate this loss with eye gaze technology but progress is slow.
We don’t know when the end will come but we do know that Anthony’s care continues to cost $10K per month. With great gratitude, we thank all who have supported Anthony over these past 3 plus years, kept him at home with excellent care and love, and enabled him to continue to be productive. We ask you once again to consider a donation to the Weller Trust.
Anthony’s personal email is firstname.lastname@example.org. Anthony always appreciates hearing from friends. Please don’t be offended if you don’t get a reply. Just know that Anthony is smiling with each message read.
